Interested in learning more about one of the most cutting edge technologies being developed for Geothermal? You have come to the right place then. This episode highlights Quaise energy and we get to hear from Carlos Araque, CEO and founder about the amazing potential of Geothermal, but also the hurdles that it faces. One of those hurdles is high upfront capital costs of which drilling wells accounts for a significant portion. The key difference here in Quaise’s model is they are looking beyond the conventional Geothermal where we exploit shallow steam reservoirs into the “Super Hot Rock” at depths greater than 5km which can be existing reservoir of hot water or steam or a scenario where we would need EGS. They are developing a millimeter wave drilling technology that will eliminate the need to trip out of the hole and change out the bit as you drill through basement rock. It will enable faster drilling and reduce costs of exploiting these deeper reservoirs located at 5km or greater depths.
Innovation has been the name of the game in directional drilling especially with the dawn of the US Shale revolution with the likes of MWD, LWD and many other tools and technologies. What if I told you that there is a new MWD coming on the scene? Well that is exactly what Carlos and I talk about in today’s episode, the idea of “Melting while Drilling” using millimeter waves to essentially vaporize the rock enabling us to access Super Hot Rock with temperatures exceeding 250 degrees C. Quaise is on to something big and it was honor to talk with Carlos and hear about the vision and goals him and his team have for the next decade.
