With over 40 years in the Geothermal industry working everything from temperature profiles in slim wells to greenfield exploration, plant management and utility power purchase agreements Catherine Hickson is a wealth of knowledge. I sit down with her today to talk about her most recent adventure, heading up the Alberta No. 1 project which aims to tap into conventional geothermal in a sedimentary basin and provide both heat and power to the grid.
In the heart of the Alberta Oil patch is a geothermal project aimed at exploiting the hot fluids at around 12,000 ft and bringing them to the surface to provide clean, dispatchable, flexible baseload power to the grid. Why in the middle of the Oil patch? There are some benefits such as the vast amount of temperature data readily available due to the sheer volume of wells, but there is also competition in the form of cheap natural gas and electricity. This is a conversation you will not want to miss as I sit down with Catherine Hickson, CEO of the Alberta No. 1 project to talk about the frontier work, legislation, financing, economics, challenges and so much more.
